The Godfather 65th Anniversary Poster

Client: The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures
Date: 2023
Type: Art Direction, Project Management

Overview

Commissioned for the Academy Museum’s exhibit celebrating The Godfather's 50th anniversary, this officially licensed 24” x 36” screenprint poster was designed to honor the film’s legacy. The final artwork, created in collaboration with Eisner-winning comic book artist Sean Phillips, was available for purchase at the Museum Gift Shop.

My Role

  • Creative Direction & Concept Development: Led the artistic vision, ensuring alignment with the film’s legacy and exhibit theme.

  • Collaboration: Worked with Sean Phillips and the Academy Museum team to craft a compelling visual narrative.

  • Production Oversight: Managed a 7-color screenprinting process, including metallic gold inks, optimizing separations with Juan Saniose.

  • Design Execution: Balanced modern design sensibilities with a vintage aesthetic, staying true to the film’s era.

Process

Working under a tight timeline to have the poster completed before the exhibit’s opening on November 1st, I collaborated closely with Sean Phillips to refine the art direction while ensuring it aligned with Paramount Pictures and the Marlon Brando estate’s licensing requirements. Throughout production, I supervised the screenprinting process with Juan Saniose and DL Screenprinting, ensuring every detail met the highest standards. A standout feature was the application of a sleek metallic gold layer to the title, elevating the final piece and making it a true collector’s item.

Results

  • A highly praised, limited-edition poster now featured at the Academy Museum Store.

  • Officially licensed by Paramount Pictures and the Marlon Brando estate.

  • Recognized for its intricate detailing, premium finish, and seamless blend of past and present design aesthetics.
